RMS goes to the Detroit Symphony Orchestra

Around the World in 45 minutes was the title of the Educational Series that the DSO put on last week. Romulus Middle School and Mr. Pethoud were able to take 40 band members to the performance on March 8th. The performance gave what was promised. Students were able to listen and watch professional musicians play songs from China, North Africa, Russia, Hungary, France, England, and finish up in the United States. It was a great experience for everyone and especially those students who have never seen an orchestra play before in person.

Parent Night 2018

Parents and students learned next to one another last Tuesday Night at Romulus Middle School. Parents were taught some card games to play at home with their children to improve math skills for the first session courtesy of Mrs. Haidar. The second session took parents into the light with UV rays. Mrs. Covert and Mrs. Green had students and parents experimenting with UV flashlights and special beads to show the effect of Ultra Violet light. Parents and students learned how sunscreen, sunglasses, and simply being in the shade have an effect on UV light exposure.

EMU Writers Workshop

Eastern Michigan University came to Romulus Middle School on January 31st to work with students. Students had the opportunity to participate in a Writers Workshop. Students were able to visit different stations around the media center to learn about writing recipes, creating 6-word memoirs, writing and illustrating comic strips, and creating secret codes. The stations were both engaging and educational. After visiting the stations, there was time at the end for students to share out to the group.

RMS Hour of Code

Romulus Middle School’s students, teachers, and parents participated in The Hour of Code global event on December 7. Participants were challenged with a fun introduction to computer science through Star Wars. Students started with writing codes for a Star Wars game and then went on to Minecraft, Disney’s Frozen, Angry Birds, and Plants vs. Zombies. The fun doesn’t have to stop, HourOfCode.com offers hundreds of one-hour activities that are completely free and are offered all year long.

United States Patent and Trademark Office Visits

A guest speaker from the USTPTO came to RMS last week. 40 students took part in the presentation learning about patents, trademarks, and intellectual property. The students learned the basics and asked great questions. The students also had the opportunity to build a kazoo based off of an expired James West patent. The presentation was hands-on and informative.

Learning Beyond the Classroom

40 Middle School students had the opportunity to visit the Henry Ford Museum last week. Students were able to visit the hands-on Pixar Exhibit and hands-on Mathematica Exhibit. During the Pixar Exhibit, students saw the process and explored the science and technology behind some of the most beloved animated films and their characters. The interactive exhibit showcased the science, technology, engineering, and math (STEM) concepts used by the artists and computer scientists who helped bring Pixar’s films to the big screen. The Matematica Exhibit offered as sense math all around you.
