Dear Romulus Community Members,

On behalf of our board of education, I would like to officially welcome you to the 2011-12 school year. We are very proud that in spite of all of the financial cutbacks from Lansing, our district will be able to continue with the board of education’s top priority of maintaining our instructional program for next year. Once again, we have to thank our community for providing the local financial support necessary to keep our schools strong.

This summer, the district continued with our high school summer school program which provided online learning opportunities to about 120 high school students. Romulus Middle School, through their federal school improvement grant also provided summer enhancements to about 60 middle school students.

We are all very excited about the start of school. Our staff has been busy over the summer with cleaning and construction projects to make sure that all of our buildings and buses are ready for the start of school. This summer, new boilers were installed at Halecreek, Wick and Barth elementary schools in addition to all of the regular cleaning and summer repairs. Funds for this project came from the district’s sinking fund that was established in 2008. Our middle school students will have more electives to choose from and the ability to earn advanced credit toward graduation.

A school calendar with special days and vacation schedules will be available at any of our buildings beginning August 22nd, however you can consult our district website at http://www.romulus.net/  for current information.

Of special note on this year’s calendar is the new teacher professional development (in-service) schedule. All schools will be released one hour early for teacher professional development twice each month beginning on Tuesday, September 13th. These early release days will replace the all day and half day teacher professional development days scheduled in the past.

Finally, for those of you who have school age children who are not currently enrolled in our schools, I would like to extend an invitation to enroll your school age children at your earliest convenience. We are busy preparing for the upcoming school year, and early enrollments enable district personnel to plan effectively. Please stop by the board office or call us at (734) 532-1600 for enrollment information.

     Sincerely,

     Carl J Weiss
