​Dozens of teachers learn new approaches toward increasing parental involvement

ROMULUS, Mich. -- Research shows parent, family, and community involvement in education correlates with higher academic performance and school improvement. That’s why the Romulus Education Association has teamed up with NEA’s Priority School Campaign and The Parent/Teacher Home Visit Project to increase communication, trust and support between families and teachers that lead toward student success. 
Through this unique partnership, educators within Romulus Community Schools receive in-depth training on how to leverage the power of family engagement. The goal is to break the cycle of blame between families and school staff by building trust and respect, instilling cultural competency and increasing personal and professional capacity for all involved.
“This training set the foundation for strengthening the partnership between the home and school which is essential for any school transformation.” said Gary Banas, president of the Romulus Education Association, who represents 180 teachers within Romulus Community Schools.
Benefits from the increased communication, trust and support between families and educators via home visits include increased student attendance rates; increased student test scores; and decreased suspension and expulsion rates.
NEA’s Priority Schools Campaign focuses attention on raising student achievement in schools, and rests on an evidence-based set of measures that include a strong partnership between the school and students’ families and an investment in increasing the skills and effectiveness of the school staff.
This new approach toward engaging families is an example of Romulus educators leading their profession, using collaborative strategies and innovations in priority schools that can create a ripple effect for change in education policy and practice nationwide.
“We want the community to feel that Romulus Middle School is an exceptional learning facility.  One way to do that is for our teachers to be visible in the community and parents to be visible in our school.” said Banas.

​Dear Romulus Parents,

This letter is to let you know of a change to our school calendar.

Friday, May 25, 2012 will be a half day of school for students and teachers. Please change your calendars.

This change is necessary due to a contractual obligation related to the Budget reduction plan for the 2012-13 school year.

Please know that as a lifelong educator, I recognize how important instructional time is for our children. It is unfortunate that because there is not enough money, the district must make additional reductions at this time.
